As part of New Zealand's commitment to protecting our natural environment, new regulations have been introduced for self-contained vehicles. These changes affect all freedom campers and vehicle owners who wish to camp on public land after 7 June 2026.
Vehicles need to meet updated requirements to be certified as self-contained.
Key updates include:
Portable toilets no longer meet the standard. Vehicles must have a permanently fixed toilet.
Enhanced requirements for water supply, wastewater, ventilation and rubbish storage.
Certification system is now managed by the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board.
Certified vehicles will receive a certificate of self-containment and a green warrant card.
If your vehicle currently has a blue warrant, you can continue to freedom camp until that warrant expires or 7 June 2026, whichever comes first.
From 7 June 2026 onwards all vehicles must be inspected and certified under the new green warrant requirements to be able to freedom camp.
We highly encourage vehicle owners to book well ahead of time to avoid delays.
Is your vehicle certified under the new rules?
Ensure your toilet and other facilities meet the new requirements for self-containment.
Once certified, display the green card clearly in your vehicle.
